Blackjack originated in France as early as the 1700's and has not decreased in popularity since then. The name comes from the ultimate payout of having a hand that includes the Ace and Jack of spades.
In the United States, blackjack was introduced around the early 1900's, but wasn't too popular at first, so most payouts were at a ratio of 3:2. Since then, however, the number of blackjack players has only increased because of the simplicity, yet profitable chances, of the classic game.
